A human capital entrepreneur, Marion McGovern founded M Squared Consulting Inc, one of the first niche-consulting firms to tap the high end of the flexible workforce. She grew the business to over $25million in sales and earned it a spot on the Inc. 500 List of the Fastest Growing Companies in America twice. Five years later, in 1993, she founded Collabrus Inc, a compliance and payroll service, designed to enable independent contractor engagements. In 2001, she wrote a book about this unique consulting model entitled, A New Brand of Expertise: How Independent Consultants are Transforming the World of Work, published by Butterworth Heinemann. As an expert in workforce models she has been featured in the San Francisco Business Times, L.A. Times, The SF Chronicle, and Forbes magazines and has appeared as an expert on the NBC Nightly News, The Bloomberg Report, Tech TV, KRON TV, NPR's TechNation and KCBS radio. In 2010, she was a participant at The Aspen Institute forum on "The Future of Work."
In 2005, McGovern completed the sale of M Squared Consulting to the Kelly Group, a public company in Johannesburg, South Africa. She remained Chairman for two years. She acted as the Interim CEO for most of 2009, and is now, once again, a Director.
Since 2006, Ms. McGovern has served as an adjunct professor of Human Resources for the University of San Francisco, McLaren School of Business. For more than 10 years, she has been a Director for CPP Inc., the publisher of the Meyers Briggs Type Indicator. She currently serves on the Board of ReSurge International, the first international humanitarian agency to provide free plastic surgery to the poor in developing countries. She is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) and The Society for Human Resource Management. She is also an active member of The World President's Organization (WPO), and is currently a Northern California Board member.
Before starting M2, McGovern had consulting positions with Booz Allen & Hamilton and Arthur D. Little. She also worked for Crocker National Bank and Business Data Analysts, a subsidiary of the Boston Consulting Group. McGovern received an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley in 1985 and a BSBA from Boston University School of Management in 1980, where she was valedictorian. She is also a graduate of the Birthing of Giants program, sponsored by MIT and Inc. Magazine.
