Member Joe Budelli Speaks: To Attract and Retain the Best, Invest in Your Employees’ Success

The Challenge:

In the situation at hand, an executive was seeking insight into how to increase retention among the company’s engineering team while improving employee satisfaction.

If you were in this situation, what would you do?

If I were in your shoes, I would focus on setting my employees up for success, with less attention placed on the longevity of their specific tenure. I would recognize that creating a company culture that values my employees’ long-term goals will inevitably lead to better recruitment of new talent. And, I would remember the excellent team members who moved on to their next opportunities, but shared their positive experience of their time working for me. That in turn led to a very positive outcome of growing my network through word-of-mouth.

Employees may come and go, but what won’t leave my organization is a great system in place that supports staff while they’re on my team. Over the years, I've evolved these practices into a successful program by offering engineers cross-functional training and educational opportunities in other disciplines, including marketing and customer service. To create a company culture that embraces personal development, I would work with the other departments to ensure everyone in the organization has access to these opportunities.

I think of it this way: If I can support my employees to expand their horizons, I’ve gained a lifelong ally. Best of luck.
