Rachel Haurwitz Among “40 Under 40” Award Winners

Congratulations to Rachel Haurwitz, CEO of Caribou Biosciences, who is among San Francisco Business Times' 2016 40 Under 40 class.  This list represents the most influential young leaders across the spectrum of Bay Area businesses who are leaders within their companies, industries and communities.

What the company does: A biotechnology company with a focus on genome engineering

Accomplishments: Haurwitz studied biology and the genome-editing technology CRISPR at UC Berkeley in 2007, when she was just 21. Caribou Biosciences, a company she co-founded along with Professor Jennifer Doudna, supports the commercial applications of CRISPR technology. She is also a co-founder of Intellia Therapeutics. She is an inventor on several patents and patent applications covering multiple CRISPR-derived technologies.

Most surprising fact about you:  Distance running is my escape. I have done five marathons in the past few years.

Proudest accomplishment: I am proud to see Caribou grow from an idea and one employee into a real company with an amazing team of about 30 people.

What else do you plan to accomplish by 40: I’ve got a lot on my plate for the next decade.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up: A fourth-grade teacher. By the time I made it to high school, I wanted to be a marine biologist.

How would you have classified yourself in high school: Valedictorian of my high school class, elected most likely to succeed (a.k.a, “nerd”).
