Member Kevin Chance Speaks: Breakneck Growth Demands Strong Processes

The Challenge:

The case at hand was brought by a CEO, whose company was experiencing dramatic growth, which in turn was causing breakdowns in certain parts of the business. The CEO was looking for advice on how to grow fast, yet build strength in the organization.

If you were in this situation, what would you do?

If I were in your shoes, I would build muscle around certain processes that resolve your current bottlenecks and help align the whole organization to continue delivering maximum value to the customer. Don’t let your explosive growth detract from this important work. Good processes are the muscles you will use to drive continued growth.

You have an enviable problem: in order to maintain rapid growth you need to lay in strong structure to underpin your operations. If I were in your shoes, I’d drive improvement by bringing someone on or hiring a consultant who has a strong background in value-stream mapping and process improvement. Have them map your existing processes to help you identify bottlenecks, and aggressively work to remedy the issues.

Having grown this business from an idea to a substantial enterprise, you naturally will have a variety of strong relationships with the people who brought you to where you are. Don’t let these relationships get in the way of establishing smart processes that help you drive results as you scale up. Use your judgment and make the call as early as possible as to whether or not these associates have the talent and skill to help you get to the next level.
